Biddeford & Saco Water Company

Water Source & Treatment

The Saco River is our sole source of supply. The Saco River begins as a small stream high in the White Mountains Of New Hampshire and flows through about 124 miles of New Hampshire and Maine forest and farmland before reaching the Water Company intakes. The majority of the area within its 1600 square mile watershed remains undeveloped or underdeveloped. We are fortunate that the Saco River is one of the cleanest major rivers in Maine and New England. The Saco River, just upstream from our intakes and extending for several miles upstream, is classified by the State Of Maine DEP as Class A & AA, which is the cleanest rating allowed. The river is a source of hydroelectric power, a major recreation area, and ultimately, the water supply for many southern Maine coastal communities. It is hoped that everyone will continue to safeguard the river so future generations can continue to enjoy its use.
